An excellent source for both understanding and improving your self-image is the book "The New Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz and Dan Kennedy. Every time I listen to it (I have it as an audiobook) I learn new things and see improvements in my self-image. I listen to the book at least twice a year and I highly recommend it.
